Eco-friendly manufacturing practices have been making waves over the years. We’re now seeing it on apparel, accessories, vehicles, homes, and timepieces. The use of innovative upcycling and recycling processes shows us just how ingenious some fashion houses can be. Tom Ford also showcases its own take with the Ocean Plastic watch collection headlined by the 004.

The Madison Avenue, New York-based label is not the first to integrate sustainable materials with timekeeping instruments. The ones we’ve featured in the past include Oris, Panerai, Fortis, and Luminox, to name a few. However, the 004 is the first to apply this to a geometric silhouette.

As the collection says, most of its components are in the polymer in question. Tom Ford presents the 004 with a 48.55 mm x 27 mm rectangular case available in black or white. These ship with color-matching braid straps woven out of 100% ocean plastic alongside a pin buckle closure system.

Instead of traditional lugs, the strap is a single long piece that goes through a loop on both ends and under the 004. Not everything here is made out of plastic. The case back, crown and pin buckle are all stainless steel. Depending on the colorway, these metal parts can flaunt a PVD coating in black or remain in the natural silver tone.

Protecting the glossy dial – in white or black – is a sapphire crystal. The “TF” branding is at 12 o’clock with a two-hand complication without any indices. This gives the 004 a clean minimalist motif despite the plastic housing that holds its quartz movement. Similar to the timepiece, the packaging it ships in is also fabricated out of ocean plastic and other recyclable materials.
