Modern watchmaking techniques and manufacturing processes enable new ways to for artisans to craft their mechanical masterpieces. Materials that were extremely difficult to work with before are no longer out of the question. Henri Grandjean & Cie showcases what’s possible through The Magician collection. Specifically, the Atrivm in Red Sapphire and Green Sapphire.
These evoke the beauty of the precious gemstone and the variety of shades possible. Everyone knows that it ranks 9 out of 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes it extremely durable. The round cases for references 50-01-HSR/RD and 50-01-HSG/GN measure 45 mm x 45.80 mm x 16 mm, with a lug width of 22 mm.
Each Atrivm features a sophisticated regulating mechanism, which is also at the core of every timepiece in The Magician series. We’re talking about the “Mysterious Triple-Axis Tourbillon” as Henri Grandjean & Cie puts it. By mounting the components on a sapphire disc, it appears to be floating independently.
These three concentric cages are made out of titanium, steel, and magnesium to keep weight in check. Moreover, the rates of revolution range between 10 seconds, 18 seconds, and 60 seconds. Next is the Grand Feu enamel in a matching shade of Red Sapphire or Green Sapphire depending on the variant.
An offset primary dial with Breguet-style Arabic numerals in silver is layered over a date wheel and its star-shaped indicator. Primary timekeeping, meanwhile, comes from polished, rhodium, spade-shaped hands. Slightly above is a fancy day/night indicator that uses a sun or moon emblem.
Elsewhere, the Atrivm runs on an in-house manual caliber. The hand-wound movement incorporates 218 internal components, 21 external components, and 29 jewels. The power reserve lasts up to 42 hours. Lastly, the watches ship with a white alligator leather strap.
