The masterful architects at Snøhetta have revealed their latest mind-boggling project, the Svart Powerhouse Hotel. Situated just above the Arctic Circle, at the foot of the Svartisen glacier in northern Norway, this unique retreat produces its own power and uses about 85% less energy per year than a modern hotel.
The sustainable building is designed to leave a minimal environmental footprint on its pristine surroundings. Its circular body extends from the shoreline into the clear waters and provides 360-degree views of the fjord, while the supporting structure, built from weather-resistant wooden poles, stretches several feet below the surface of the fjord.
All of the hotel’s spaces are strategically placed to exploit the Sun’s energy. The roof is clad in solar panels, while various terraces provide shadow, removing the need for artificial cooling in high temps.
