A while back, we featured a wonderful collaboration between WhistlePig and Mr. Black which appeals to those who enjoy rye whiskey and coffee. Their partnership gave us the Barrel Aged Coffee Liqueur. After its special stint with the Vermont-based distillery, the Australian brand announces a new expression for 2022 – the Mezcal Cask.
Similar to their previous tie-in with WhistlePig, Mr. Black decides to infuse their drink with a distinctly Mexican flavor. The other half of this venture calls on Ilegal Mezcal. They supply the containers that impart a familiar essence to the cold brew coffee liqueur. Just like it says on the label, this is already known to those who enjoy the agave-based spirit.
To give you a little background on what this concoction is all about, let’s start with Mr. Black. The establishment operates out of Sydney wherein it blends Australian wheat vodka, Arabica coffee beans, and sugar. They then use a cold extraction process to create the dark sweet goodness you all know and love. What makes it the Mezcal Cask?
Next, we have Ilegal Mezcal, which provides the American oak barrels which previously housed their spirit – thus, the Mezcal Cask distinction. The Mr. Black coffee liqueur then rests inside for three months and soaks in the characteristics, while the addition of joven espadin mezcal further enhances its profile.
Hence, each sip brings notes of spice, nutmeg, and smokey agave. “The blend is rich, yet balanced like Mr. Black, but finishes with toasted agave flavors and a hint of smoke. We produced 30 barrels of this label and I’m glad–every sip will leave you wanting more,” says the Aussie group’s founder Tom Baker. He also points out that the Mezcal Cask “is one of the most delicious editions we’ve ever made.”
