Last month, Heart Aerospace announced the successful test flight of its X1 demonstrator. As competition for eco-friendly commercial flights heats up, developments like this are a substantial step in the right direction. With this in mind, the company is thrilled to announce the impending arrival of the new ES-36. As of our writing, the current target is sometime in 2028.
Since the aviation industry has yet to fully realize its goal of emission-free air travel, incremental achievements are met with positivity. To be honest, most projects are already making huge strides despite existing technological limitations. Hence, the American outfit is willing to explore acceptable alternatives in the meantime.
Unfortunately, this positions the ES-36 as a stepping stone of sorts instead of a groundbreaking platform. This aircraft comes with a hybrid-electric propulsion system that can fly non-stop for 745 miles. Nevertheless, it can switch to fully-electric mode for short-haul trips up to 125 miles before the MW-class turbogenerator kicks into gear.
Its sleek airframe features a top-mount wing configuration spanning 95 feet. Overall, we’re looking at a passenger capacity of approximately 36 including a 55 lbs. luggage allocation each. For now, Heart Aerospace plans to service markets stateside and in Europe. Hopefully more countries will follow in the future.
To reduce the workload of its pilots, the cockpit incorporates the latest fly-by-wire flight deck technology. Heart Aerospace believes the ES-36 cuts “regional aircraft operating costs by” more than 40%. According to reports, the hybrid passenger plane is due for a 2031 commercial launch. However, expect to see it in action as early as 2028.
