LEGO celebrates the monumental lunar adventure of Artemis II, the first voyage in 54 years. The Orion spacecraft successfully blasted off to space on Wednesday evening to begin the 10-day mission of circumnavigating the moon. LEGO Technic teamed up with NASA and ESA to bring a functional model of the Artemis moon rocket straight to your desk with the NASA Artemis Space Launch System Rocket (42221).
The 632-piece model depicts a highly detailed version of the real Orion launch system, complete with blue flame details, plus an information panel for an eye-catching display. The model recreates the three-stage separation process as the rocket launches into space through a hand-crack mechanism.
Turn the crank and watch as the solid rocket boosters detach from the core stage. Then, followed by the upper stage with the engine module, the Orion spacecraft, and the launch abort system. The NASA Artemis Space Launch System Rocket stands 27.5″ tall, and measures 6.5″ (16 cm) long and 3″ (8 cm) wide when the rocket is on top.
Moreover, the set includes four astronaut nanofigures and a new Technic connector piece designed for the fusilli worm gear system. It’s the first Technic set to use this mechanism. It’s compatible with the LEGO Builder app for a digital version of the building instructions (3D instructions, zoom, rotation, and progress tracking).
LEGO previously released the NASA Artemis Space Launch System (10341) building kit, which depicts the real launch systems. The set includes retractable launch tower umbilicals, rocket support and crew bridge, detachable solid-fuel boosters, and separating rocket stages. It also includes a model of the Orion with foldout solar panels.
