Rides of death don’t come any cooler than Hoversurf’s new rideable Scorpion 3. Okay, so we’re being a bit dramatic with the whole “ride of death” thing. But being the world’s first hoverbike you can actually ride on, and with proof that it works, you can’t help but be excited and terrified in equal measure.
The Russian drone company just showed off the S3 in action, and in the video you can see that it’s lifting a person and hovering forward like it’s no big deal. The manufacturers say they wanted to combine a motorcycle with quadcopter drone technology to make the “extreme sports instrument.”
Nothing as extreme as being hauled off by a flying bike, if we do say so ourselves. The aircraft is meant to be used by “amateur and professional navigators,” according to Hoversurf. It utilizes custom-built software to purposefully limit the bike’s flight range to assure safer rides.
So, how does it work exactly?
Hoversurf apparently based the design on heavy-duty sport-utility motorbike frames, and the thing flies by changing altitude and direction. Hoversurf didn’t get into the nitty-gritty details of exactly how this machine is able to course through the air like some prop in a Star Wars picture, but sometimes it’s best to keep the mystery alive, don’t you think?
Anyhow, the more important question is what’s next. With demonstrations like this one, you can be sure the technology is there to make hoverbikes a reality, and soon enough you might see them flourish in commercial markets suppose a demand sprouts out of sheer excitement for how futuristic this all looks. If that happens, what will we do? How will traffic laws change?
