On a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, architects Desai Chia collaborated with Environment Architects (AOR) of Traverse City, to create what was to become a multiple award-winning home. Made of three offset structures whose undulating roofscape is inspired by and plays off the surrounding landscape, the Michigan Lake House is on the peninsula that makes up Leelanau County in the northwest part of mainland Michigan and makes extensive use of full-wall glazing to showcase the lake.
The main structure contains the kitchen and living room and extends out to a ‘vista’ terrace under a twenty foot cantilevered roof. Connected by a covered passageway, the other two structures hold the master bedroom and children’s bedrooms.
Rescuing the dying Ash trees from the area, the wood was milled for extensive use in the floors, ceiling, and cabinetry. Locally-sourced stone was used for pathways, seating areas, and steps while the exterior was given a Japanese charred wood treatment to further enhance the home’s blending with its environment.
