Sony has just raised the bar on what you can expect out of action camera footage! The new FDR-X3000 shoots up to 4K 3840 x 2160 resolution at 30/25/24 fps and its companion, the HDR-AS300 ($300+) creates full-on HD footage. While the new Sony action-cams look a lot like the older models, they are both splash and freeze-proof and come with a waterproof housing good down to 197 feet (60 m.)
Both these cameras sport a wide-angle Zeiss Tessar F2.8 lens, with an 8.2-megapixel 1/2.5-inch type back-illuminated CMOS sensor and the way they work together is what sets these cameras above the rest. Called Balanced Optical SteadyShot, the lens and sensor are locked together to compensate for any shaking they experience. With this wobble removed, the new Sonys provide exceptionally clear and more easily viewed footage of your adventure.
Not only do they remove the shakes, the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity lets you live stream with Android and iOS apps as well as hook up to the Live-View Remote LCD screen. They also, incidentally, have both GPS and speedometer functions to prove your daring deeds. Looks like the ubiquitous GoPro has a serious rival!
