The Icon A5 Amphibious Sport Plane ($190,000) makes flying more accessible for anyone (with large bank accounts) who’s ever dreamed of cruising the skies at their own will. With 12 years in the making, this flying 2-seater is built by some of the world’s best aircraft/car/boat designers (led by a former U.S. Air Force pilot), and the result is a very intuitive, versatile and fun personal plane.
The ingenious aircraft has a single prop behind the cockpit, which is powered by a 100 hp Rotax 912 engine running on regular premium gasoline. It can fly for up to 400 miles on a full tank, at maximum 109 miles per hour and at 15,000 feet of altitude. Thanks to its lightweight airframe and folding wings, the plane can easily be towed & stored in a garage, while operating it requires a sport license that takes only 20 hours of training. The A5 boasts an array of cool features including a high visibility canopy, removable side windows, high intensity lighting, retractable landing gear, air parachute, and water platforms that allow it to take off & land on water. Made in California, USA.
