Amsterdam-based design studio Fiction Factory has spent four years researching and developing a pioneering construction technology that involves a rotating house-shaped mold and cardboard – lots of it. Now they’re proud to introduce the fruit of their work: the Wikkel Cardboard Houses ($Inquire) – finished with waterproof coating & wood paneling, and promising to last 100 years.
With an outer layer made of 24 sheets of high-strength cardboard, bonded togeder with Eco-friendly superglue and wrapped around a (what looks like metal-made) mold, the 100% recyclable homes are said to boast an “incredibly robust sandwich structure with optimal insulation qualities.” Each Wikkelhouse is made up of 4 ft (1.2 m) deep segments that can easily be connected or disconnected, and weigh in at only 1,103 lbs (500 kilos), eliminating the need for a foundation to be built, and making possible for the dwellings to be placed (and moved) practically anywhere, from the beach-side to your backyard or even on a rooftop.
Buyers can add as many segments and customize as they wish their cardboard houses (i.e., extra windows, different finishings), and have them installed at the chosen location in just one day.
