Coming to auction in May is this 1955 Moretti 750 Gran Sport Barchetta–a unique fun-to-drive vehicle, fully Concours-restored and ready for the track.
Known for its lively twin cam engine, the 750 Gran Sport was a small gem built by Turinese manufacturer Moretti. The ultra-rare model you see here is believed to have raced in the 1956 Mille Miglia; is one out of three to sport the Barchetta (“little boat” in Italian) bodywork and the only one with a lightweight tubular steel chassis.
In the current owner’s custody, the car has been restored by UK’s G-Cat Racing with a view to making it as competitive and reliable as possible. The engine, gearbox, and suspension were all rebuilt, a competition clutch was fitted, and a new set of magnesium alloy wheels were cast.
The vehicle has an aluminum body and is powered by a 750cc inline-4 cylinder engine with double overhead cams, while its minimalist, race-focused cockpit features a large wood-rimmed steering wheel, two bucket seats, and modern-but-period-correct instruments for reliability. Professionally prepared for historic motorsports, this previous participant in the 2014 Le Mans Classic and 2013 Mille Miglia Storica is expected to fetch around $300K.
