Climate change, limited resources, social alienation and urbanization are some of the threats growing city populations are faced with. Prepared to tackle each of these issues, the Elastic Woodscraper II is a new concept skyscraper, combining a mix of ideal features under its roof.

Designed by Weingartner Architects, this smart building’s structure is 70 percent made of wood, vastly reducing the impact of construction on the environment. Up to nine alternately offset “skycubes” can be mounted onto the central concrete core, each split into five floors and containing 15 apartments (with 646 sq ft or 1,023 sq ft of space). An exterior frame will also be employed, reinforcing the structure. Covering the construction, a glass skin is aimed at reducing the costs of heating, air conditioning and lighting, and avoiding the need for light screens, while a combined heat and power station ensures residents are making efficient use of energy. The crafty building will also feature floor-to-ceiling glazing in each apartment providing impressive views, and a rooftop terrace with an urban garden for on-site urban farming.  The terraces will each feature a playground, a whirlpool and sauna, a sun deck and a barbecue area. It looks like we’ll soon be able to admire an Elastic Woodscraper II in Switzerland.   via
