Scandinavian design is praised worldwide for its minimalist yet functional approach. Some of you likely have a couple of items at home or at the office that are inspired by it. Furniture is perhaps the most recognized globally, but Snøhetta also wants people to recognize Nordic eye for architecture. The Shanghai Grand Opera House is one of its recent creations.

For a while now, China has regularly made headlines for outstanding architectural projects. A few might have drawn enough publicity, given that these are located in cities, which are major tourist destinations. Meanwhile, the rest seem to have flown under the radar since the sites do not see a huge influx of visitors.

As its name suggests, the Shanghai Grand Opera House is poised to become another cultural destination in the country. The dramatic silhouette of the building is framed by the iconic skyline of the city. Moreover, its proximity to the waterfront makes it accessible by ferry and visible to those on river cruises, especially at night.

The exact address is listed as 1 Yongzhan Road, Pudong New Area. Others tell us the new civic gathering spot is part of the Houtan neighborhood, or Expo Culture Park. Although the structure reportedly touts a footprint of roughly 559,971 square feet, its volumes span a total of approximately 1,579,991 square feet.

Among the facilities within are the Harmony Hall, Mirror Hall, Grand Atelier, and the Soar Theater. In total, we’re looking at a total of 4,200 seats spread across these spaces. Elsewhere, the Shanghai Grand Opera House calls on a 92-foot-high double-helix staircase as a distinctive feature. It also functions as a public rooftop/viewing deck that offers panoramic vistas of the city and more.
