Mercedes-AMG’s Project ONE hybrid hypercar is more than just a passing nod at Formula 1 technology. Mercedes has injected the Project ONE with the very same 1.6 liter V6 gasoline motor with direct injection and electric-assist single turbocharger used in their Petronas Formula 1 racing car!
In itself the V6 creates 700 horsepower but when coupled with the four electric motors (two on the front axle, one on the crankshaft, and the fourth integrated into the turbocharger) the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE produces over 1,000 horses and a top speed over 217 mph (350 km/h). The jump from 0-60 takes less than three seconds. The slinky, shark-like body is made of lightweight carbon fiber and is suitably full of air vents and intakes. Inside are wide-format LCD instrument displays, an F1-style rectangular steering wheel, and unusual siamesed seats.
Mercedes-AMG plans to make only 275 units of the Project ONE and reports are that they have already been sold on pre-order even though production doesn’t start till 2019.
