When automotive companies want to make a statement or prove something, there’s one way to do it. You take that machine to one of the world’s most grueling tracks and push it to the limit. The notorious Nürburgring will test the mettle of both vehicle and driver across 73 turns. Despite these challenges, Ford just beat Chevrolet’s record with a GT Mk IV.

The Blue Oval has been held in high regard for its pony cars, trucks, and SUVs. However, motorsports fans are aware that the company has also achieved several victories across various types of races. These podium finishes include the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Formula 1, World Rally Championship, and NASCAR.

Its most recent attempt was against the Corvette ZR1X. The Golden Bowtie’s mid-engine sports car comes in various configurations. Hence, the top-of-the-line trim package was bound to outperform expectations. Despite the unfavorable weather reported on the day, professional driver Frédéric Vervisch overcame everything aboard the GT Mk IV.

The standing record by Chevrolet’s track-only platform was 6:49.275 minutes, which was set last year. Meanwhile, Ford’s attempt was clocked in at 6:15.977 minutes, and it’s a remarkable achievement for the American marque. It now bears the distinction of being the fastest American-built ICE race car in history.

Upon checking, the GT Mk IV currently sits comfortably at the third spot overall. Ahead of this sleek beast clad in blue is the Volkswagen ID.R at 6:05.336 minutes, while the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo leads at 5:19.546 minutes. Other notable vehicles under the Ford Racing banner with outstanding records include an F-150 Lightning SuperTruck, Transit SuperVan 4.2, and Mustang GTD.
