A high-end camera can be an expensive investment. Even an entry-level model from a reputable brand rivals the price of a flagship smartphone several times over. The new Leica Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition, for example, is ridiculously expensive for the average user. Nonetheless, professionals will find that it checks all the right boxes. For those interested, here’s what to expect.
Straight out of the box, the design of this compact, full-frame, fixed-lens camera gives off a motorsports vibe. With an official licensing deal with its namesake, the design channels a distinct high-performance aesthetic brought about by its construction. At its core, the body and frame are die-cast magnesium, a metal known for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio.
The engineers then use other materials to form the rest of the housing, alongside an IP52-rated weather-resistant seal. Next is the microvelour body wrap, which gives the Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition a tactile feel akin to that of racing-grade steering wheels. This replaces the signature leatherette of the standard version.
Unique to this SKU are the Formula 1 Red accents and carbon fiber elements. The former appears on the soft-release shutter button surround and right-hand function button, while the composite clads the detachable HG-DC1 handgrip, removable hotshoe thumb rest, and soft-release shutter button.
Furthermore, there is an F1 logo on the top plate, an F1 logo on the lens cover, the Leica red dot badge at the front, and a co-branded carrying strap. Lastly, the unit is “based on the Leica Q3 43 model. It retains the original model’s outstanding image quality and intuitive operation, combining them with an exclusive design inspired by the world of motorsport.”
