Are you interested in a major upgrade to mainstream robotic helpers? So far, modern households own a robot vacuum, a robot lawnmower, or a robot pool cleaner. In fact, some own all three or even more. If it’s a humanoid platform you’re after, commercially available options are not that many. However, those not in a hurry should wait for the D01.
One of our more recent articles was about the Digit 5. This motorized bipedal model could pave the way for similar configurations in the coming years. However, there might be some caveats to consider here. Instead of allocating processing power and energy for balancing on two legs, wheels offer efficiency and stability.
We understand the D01 also has a few downsides, but its capabilities more than make up for them. The unit stands approximately 5.3 feet when upright, and weighs 88.2 lbs. Sharpa says the wingspan with its arms out — including hands — is about 5.7 feet. At the core is an NVIDIA Jetson Thor chipset.
As the marketing materials point out, its 7-DoF arms benefit from a wide range of motion, while the 1:1 scale dimensions ensure the robot never feels out of place in any household. According to Sharpa, its limbs can support a maximum payload of 11.02 lbs. Meanwhile, movements are quick and responsive at >10.5 m/s (maximum end-effector speed).
To keep latency down to a minimum, the D01 touts a communication frequency of 1,000 Hz. Furthermore, the high-fidelity 74 dB dynamic range also enhances depth perception. Another cool aspect of this robot helper is the Body Tactile E-skin, which is sensitive at a 100 Hz tactile sampling rate, which makes it “sensitive enough to register the light brush of a feather.”
