For a long time now, most smartphones have come in a candybar form factor. Likewise, over the years, manufacturers have kept the display aspect ratio between 19.5:9, 20:9, and 21:9. To our surprise, it seems there is a growing market for wider formats these days. The latest example is something like the Huawei Pura X View.
A reason why many handsets ship in a tall and narrow configuration is to accommodate larger displays yet remain comfortable enough for single-hand use. However, the recent arrival of devices such as the Pura X, Pura X Max, and Galaxy Z Fold8 might be a hint of a major shakeup.
In fact, the exterior screen of Apple’s upcoming iPhone Ultra foldable is reportedly using a 4:3 display aspect ratio. The Pura X View is doubling down on this apparent demand by rocking a 6.39″ OLED panel with an odd 16:9.5 aspect ratio. It boasts a 2230 x 1320 resolution with a peak brightness of 6.500 nits.
Huawei is scheduled to publish the full specifications next week, but teases a few more ahead of the official launch. At the core of each unit is a Kirin 9030S chipset and a 7,000 mAh battery. In the meantime, primary imaging comes from three 50-megapixel sensors in a horizontal arrangement on a pill-shaped camera module.
At its slimmest point, the Pura X View measures a slim 6.68 mm. Out of the box, the device runs HarmonyOS 7. “From inspiration to finished product, the widescreen display gives your creativity more room to flourish. Read documents more completely, browse materials more easily, and work efficiently on the go,” reads the press release.
