Lighting designs come in all shapes and sizes, some becoming art displays rather than functional additions in the home. The Seletti x BIC Cristal Lamp offers both: offering light while becoming a statement piece in any home setup.

Its design may be familiar to those who grew up knowing or using the BIC ballpoint pen. Aptly so, this lamp is a scaled-up iteration of that pen, made to celebrate its 75th anniversary.

Designed by Mario Paroli and Italian lighting brand Seletti, the BIC Cristal Lamp features a transparent, hexagonal barrel, which instead of ink, as its namesake, contains an LED light fixture. The LED casts a warm glow for a comfortable ambiance.

Aside from the barrel, there’s also the design of the cap and end,  which borrows from the original BIC pen. It is available in classic black, blue, or red and features a power cord attached in a matching color.

Meanwhile, the BIC logo is  at the top end of the shaft. Its font design also replicates the original logo from its namesake. Moreover, like the original, the lamp comprise of plastic material.

The BIC Cristal Lamp specifically uses polycarbonate and high density polyethylene. It is available in different configurations, either as a wall, floor, or pendant lamp, which all measure 178 centimeters long.

“Turning this everyday object into a larger-than-life lamp shows the impact this simple ballpoint pen, created in 1950, has had on collective imagination,” said Bic’s general manager for stationary David Cabero.

“There are few objects that can boast a presence in classrooms and boardrooms alike – now to be also featured in homes across the world through Seletti’s Bic Lamp!”. The BIC Cristal lamp will be commercially available from the end of March to the start of April this year.
