Tokyo is an explosion of color, albeit artificial. I have been to the capital of Japan and I can say it is a seething cauldron of neon, a jungle of flashing signs, glowing advertisements, and blinking electronics. If that sounds terrible then please take my word for it that it is actually quite beautiful and artistic.
With that in mind it is hardly surprising to see that photographer Shinichi Higashi has seen much inspiration in his homeland. However, he sees the lights, neon, and bustling nightlife of Tokyo differently and he takes the busy urban sprawl and shoots it with a slow shutter before getting creative in the editing stage.
Higashi takes long exposure shots and splits his images so that he can symmetrically mirror them through the center The result is an ingenious look that is like a butterfly in terms of symmetry, but is also a collage of color and light. We expect to see this collection in a nice art book soon, and if not we should all get on Higashi’s case until he puts one out.
