Gooding & Company is hosting its London Auction 2022 with 40 lots available for bidding. Almost every machine in the lineup is exquisite. Among the prestigious marques represented are Ferrari, Maserati, Rolls-Royce, Bugatti, Bentley, Jaguar, Porsche, and Mercedes-Benz. There’s only one from the latter and it’s a 1956 300 SL Gullwing.
We are yet to see them start the action for this motoring icon, but the organizers believe it should fetch anywhere between $1.2 million to $1.5 million. It’s also likely for bids to surpass estimates when the hammer falls, but we’ll wait and see. Firstly, interested parties should know that this stunning coupe arrives in factory colors.
Furthermore, an inspection by Gooding & Company confirms matching numbers for the body, chassis, and engine. The original Karl Baisch luggage set, manuals, tool roll, and belly pans are all included as well. Collectors are very particular about this, so the 1956 Mercedes-Benz SL 300 Gullwing should be up to snuff to even the most snobbish of buyers.
Its exterior is finished in Elfenbein (ivory) while the interior shows red tartan upholstery. The listing shows a 3.0-liter SOHC inline-six with Bosch mechanical fuel inject rated at 220 bhp at 6.500 rpm. The powertrain is completed by a four-speed manual transmission. The 1956 Mercedes-Benz SL 300 Gullwing also sports hydraulic drum brakes with servo assist.
As far as the suspension system goes, the coupe is outfitted with an independent double-wishbone with coil springs on the front and a swing axle with coil springs for the rear. This 1956 Mercedes-Benz SL 300 Gullwing was originally sold in the United States and was in the hands of several owners. There were also some restorations along the way, but it remains a classic beauty.
