Leave it to Vollebak to create the craziest wearable tech out there: from jackets made with graphene to suits incorporated with aerogel. This time, the team integrated speakers into what it calls the “world’s first Sonic clothing,” the Sonic Jacket. The design stems from the scientific fact that different frequencies can affect brainwaves and psychological states.

Alpha waves between 8 Hz and 12 Hz help with relaxation, internal focus, and reduced sensory distraction. Theta waves from 4 Hz to 8 Hz are associated with sleep and meditation, while Gamma waves from 30 Hz to 100 Hz are associated with higher focus and attention. Certain frequencies, sounds, or vibrations can elicit different emotions, including calmness, happiness, and even lead to introspection.

Hence, Vollebak worked with London-based film and television special effects studio FBFX to build the Sonic Jacket. The studio’s credits include “The Martian,” “Halo, and “Star Wars,” to name a few. Together, they built 180 speakers into the Sonic Jacket that fire sound directly into your body rather than outward. These are small speakers, each measuring just 32mm in diameter and 10mm deep, evenly distributed across the jacket’s body, arms, and hood, and mounted in laser-cut holes. The speakers generate frequencies from 4 Hz to 20,000 Hz. You’ll feel the vibrations, and Vollebak cautioned against wearing it in public, should you find yourself orgasming from the frequency.

Moreover, an MP3 player and a large dial let you control the frequency feed. The MP3 player has ten pre-set frequencies, while the dial lets you experiment with different frequencies. Additionally, a Micro SD card reader that holds up to 1,000 pre-set frequencies lets you create a personalized library. Currently, Vollebak is working on a Sonic Jacket app to enable Bluetooth connectivity with the control unit.
