It appears the aviation industry is inching even closer to emission-free flights. In fact, as of this writing, several projects are underway. Some are still in the early concept phases, while others are far into development. The latter includes prototypes and demonstrators ready for testing. One such model is the X1 by Heart Aerospace.
Always on the lookout for news regarding green aeronautical endeavors, the team can’t wait for eco-friendly flights to become mainstream. According to the Los Angeles, California-based group, its platform “is the largest electric aircraft ever to fly. Electric aviation at commercial scale is no longer a question of if, but when.”
The fuselage measures 106 feet from nose to tail, while the wingspan is listed at 106 feet. With the landing gears deployed, the X1 stands 24 feet. Details about the test flight indicate a maximum altitude of 2,000 feet AGL (above ground level) at a maximum speed of 140 knots.
It also reportedly withstood a maximum maneuver load of 1.5G. Moreover, the demonstrator flew with a single pilot on board and via 100% battery electric propulsion. Heart Aerospace says the historic first flight was conducted at Plattsburgh International Airport (KPBG) in August 2026.
This is a significant milestone for the company, as well as its investors. “Lower-cost air travel starts with a new kind of aircraft. With X1, we are entering the electric age of commercial aviation,” states founder and CEO Anders Forslund.
Ultimately, the goal of the X1 demonstrator is to pave the way for the ES-30 — a hybrid electric model that will service a little over 30 passengers per trip. Operators can choose to fly it on battery power alone for up to 125 miles. However, it can technically reach up to 500 miles in hybrid mode. The target date for certification is sometime in 2031.
