Benchmade’s Mini SOCP Folder puts a 3.76-inch blade into a smaller version of Greg Thompson’s distinctive design. That still leaves plenty of knife: the new model measures 8.67 inches open and costs $350. The “Mini” name makes more sense beside the full-size SOCP than it does on its own.

The older 391 SOCP Folder has a 4.47-inch blade and spans 10.13 inches overall. The Mini cuts those measurements by 0.71 and 1.46 inches, respectively. Folded, it measures 4.91 inches, down from 5.66 inches. Those are useful reductions if the original’s length was what put you off.

There is a less obvious trade-off on the scale. Benchmade lists the Mini at 4.31 ounces, compared with the older folder’s listed 4.10 ounces. It is shorter, then, without being lighter. Anyone replacing an existing SOCP should keep both numbers in view.

New materials and a removable ring

The blade moves from the original’s D2 tool steel to S30V stainless steel, while textured G10 replaces the older CF-Elite handle scales. The new spear-point blade has a partially serrated edge and a Cerakote coating. Desert Tan pairs sand-colored scales with a Flat Earth blade; the other version combines black scales with Graphite Black Cerakote.

The finger ring is the most recognizable piece of hardware, but it is removable. Benchmade describes a full finger-ring backspacer and an alternative ring-equipped pocket clip, allowing the handle’s outline and carry arrangement to change.

This remains a manual folder with Benchmade’s AXIS lock. The company lists thumb-disc, thumb-stud and pocket-hook opening options.

Benchmade has also explored different materials in models such as the Burnt Brass Aluminum Bugout. Here, the smaller dimensions and configurable ring are the details that distinguish the new SOCP.

The Mini SOCP Folder is listed at $350 in both Black and Desert Tan on Benchmade’s US store.
