With the 2022 Monterey Car Week already underway, we can expect a week of awesome automobile announcements and auctions. We’ll cover whatever we can so you can check back with us to see what’s new. Aston Martin blows us away with the reveal of the DBR22 – a concept that pays tribute to the DB3S.
The British marque has a remarkable motorsport legacy and loves to regularly revisit its classic catalog for inspiration. Occasionally, it also offers continuation cars, but in highly exclusive numbers. As a modern take on an iconic racer, the DBR22 incorporates familiar elements.
The long nose and wheelbase tell us the machine is engineered for high-performance motoring. Powering this sleek spyder is a 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 generating 705 horsepower and 555 lb-ft of torque. Aston Martin is pairing it with an eight-speed paddle-shift automatic gearbox.
Track tests show it can hit a top speed of 198 and accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds. Side by side with the DB3S, the curvature of the DBR22’s body is not as pronounced as its predecessor. Nonetheless, its aerodynamics is top-notch and aids its driving dynamics on the street or on the tracks.
Owners may want to check the weather first before their drive as there is nothing to protect them from the elements. Silhouettes without windshields or top covers like DBR22 may look cool, but many find them impractical. The least Aston Martin could do is provide a removable top.
Conversely, this gives us a clear view of the DBR22’s cockpit. Carbon fiber with leather upholstery and metal trims is as elegant as you can get. This is just a concept for now, but Aston Martin hints at a production model, which is sure to be exclusively limited.
