In 2023, Vollebak released the Indestructible Belt crafted from the world’s mightiest fiber, Dyneema, which is 15x stronger than steel. It boasts four tons of holding power; it can literally tow vehicles. Of course, the British clothing brand continues to push the boundaries of modern apparel by incorporating astronomical engineering into its designs. This is the case with its latest drop, the Chaotic Metal Belt, which has a surprising NASA connection.

It may look like an ordinary leather belt, but its buckle is anything but ordinary. It’s crafted from amorphous metal (a.k.a. metallic glass or glassy metals). This alloy has several applications, including military armor, power transformers, electronics, and industrial parts. NASA has been exploring the material for use in spacecraft gears that operate in extremely cold environments, including Jupiter’s frozen moons.

It exhibits high strength, elasticity, corrosion resistance, and electrical resistance. As such, the buckle on the Chaotic Metal Belt is extremely durable and flexible. It flexes under pressure or stress instead of breaking, then returns to its original form afterward.

Vollebak says the buckle has a tensile yield strength of about 1.6 gigapascals, which makes it two to four times stronger than a stainless-steel buckle. It boasts a hardness rating of around 480 HV5 (tool steel territory), making it highly resistant to scratches, deformation, and wear.

The Chaotic Metal Belt features a 1.32-inch-wide classic Italian leather strap. The leather ages gracefully and develops its own patina over time, making it unique to its user. As for the buckle, the brand says it should retain its original appearance over time.
