When URWERK is not actively developing a brand new reference, it’s revamping previous releases with new colors. The most recent model to receive such a revamp is the UR-150 Scorpion, which now flashes a hint of gold. The yellowish tone of the timepiece looks great as it contrasts against the rest of its darker elements.

True to its avant-garde approach to design, the watch positions the crown at the top side of the case band. The case measures 42.49 mm x 52.31 mm x 14.79 mm and is crafted out of 2N yellow gold. The metal housing of each UR-150 Scorpion also features a satin polish. It likewise sports concentric circular patterns and textural knurling on both flanks.

Next are the four black screws framing the double-dome sapphire crystal of the dial. The exhibition case back also mirrors this look, but showcases the rotor of the UR-50.01 automatic caliber and its dual-turbine winding system. The self-winding movement touts a Swiss lever escapement, 38 jewels, a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vph), and a 43-hour power reserve.

Of course, the biggest attraction here is a retrograde minute mechanism and its three-prong flying carousel. Each tip holds the hour disc, which follows along the path of the pointer and rotates to reflect the subsequent hour. This is basically how its flyback system keeps time and becomes a mechanical marvel that owners can enjoy.

The watchmaker completes the presentation of the golden UR-150 Scorpion with a textured, black rubber strap. “The scorpion is a nasty beast – yet the design of the UR-150 is gentle. It’s very URWERK … the aggressive symbolism belies the reality of the watch’s cool, calm personality,” states brand co-founder Felix Baumgartner.
