Rolex has nailed a distinct design formula that is not about to change drastically anytime soon. There is no need to do so unless an innovation or mechanical breakthrough requires it. Nonetheless, the watchmaker does occasionally dabble in unique and flashy timepieces now and then. The latest of such ventures is The Four Seasons — a dazzling collection heading to auction.
“As part of the Perpetual Planet Initiative, Roger Federer and Leonardo DiCaprio have joined forces with Rolex in an effort that reflects their commitment to children’s education and the planet,” notes the press release. “Four unique and exclusive gem-set versions of the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona, each inspired by a season, will be offered in four lots at auction.”
In addition to the celebrities, another major partner is the PHILLIPS auction house. The venue is due to host the event later this month. All proceeds from The Four Seasons sale will reportedly benefit two organizations: Re:wild and the Federer Foundation. Each reference is a bespoke variant of an iconic silhouette.
Across the board, we’re looking at a stunning variety of precious metals and gemstones. However, the technical specifications should match those of the standard Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona. In charge of precision timekeeping is an in-house 4131 self-winding caliber with a 72-hour power reserve, and it is Superlative Chronometer certified.
The Spring features 18K white gold, chrysoprase, lepidolite, and purple sapphire. Meanwhile, Summer uses 18K Everose gold, turquoise, ruby, and pink sapphires. Next, we have Autumn, which is in 18K yellow gold, mookaite, chrysoprase, and green tourmalines. Finally, Winter is presented in 950 platinum, blue opal, lapis lazuli, and blue/fuchsia gradient sapphires. These make up The Four Seasons lineup.
