In a little over a month, Ducati is slated to launch a new set of wheels with off-road capabilities. In fact is enjoys a formidable reputation in motorsports courtesy of multiple victories. These are in prestigious races such as MotoGP, WorldSBK, WorldSSP, and more. Due to hit dealerships this August is the Desmo450 SM.
The manufacturer confirms that it has yet to publish the official specifications of this new model. Nevertheless, several online sources seem to agree on what’s likely to ship with the bike. So far, they’re billing it as the Italian marque’s “first factory-built, race-spec” supermoto. From the looks of it, they could be on to something.
Extremely likely details include an upgraded suspension system, radial-mount Brembo brake calipers with Galfer Floatech wave discs, and Takasago Excel spoked rims wrapped in Metzeler tires. The Desmo450 SM is also supposedly rocking a 16.5″ front wheel and 17″ rear wheel arrangement.
As for the engine, there is talk of a 449.6 cc, single-cylinder engine with a 63.5-horsepower output. Small but relevant tweaks are also going into the frame, fairings, and powertrain tuning for optimal on-track performance. Of course, with some subtle modifications, this machine will gladly accompany its rider on rides over slightly rougher terrain. Yet, we wouldn’t recommend it.
“In the hands of four-time Supermoto World Champion Marc Reiner Schmidt, it has already raced and secured victories in its first competitions. The Desmo450 SM has been developed specifically for this discipline, featuring dedicated brakes, suspension, engine components, and specific bodywork elements,” writes Ducati.
