As our civilization slowly weans itself from petroleum-based transportation, electric power is coming into its own. Tern Bicycles has developed an e-bike that’s perfect for the city commute. Or so they claim. But considering that Tern Vektron Folding Electric Bike is powered by a German Bosch drivetrain and features a superior, tool-free folding function, you gotta give them credit.
Between Tern’s renown stable construction and Bosch’s powerful drive system, the Vektron demonstrates the future of electric commuter bikes. The 36 V / 250 W motor is powered by a 400 Wh battery that provides between 40 – 80 miles range/charge, and is computer-assisted to balance pedals and power for a smooth ride. At just under 49 lbs (22 Kg), this bike is easily handled when folded by riding on the tires and steered with a special grip built into the bottom of the seat. It folds to a mere 16″ x 34″ x 26″ so it can fit in car trunks or closets.
The Vektron has a load capacity of 230 pounds tops, and can easily maintain 20 mph (32 Km/h). It also comes with a Yepp Maxi Easyfit child seat that mounts on the rear rack and can hold a child up to 6 years old (or a large furry friend). Finally, the mid-motor design is much sturdier and long-lasting than any hub-motor system in existence, so you know you’ll have a solid ride for many years.
