The Long Studio

The 30×40 Design Workshop on Mount Desert Island on the midcoast of Maine got its name from the simple floor dimensions of their signature work.  This multi-function structure, a modern take on the workshop or barn, morphs for each season providing both wide door apertures with the sliding double door on the long front, narrower doors on the end for storage, and strategically placed windows that provide ventilation and passive lighting.

The Long Studio was created as a teaching tool as much as a place to learn.  The insides quickly convert to such varied tasks as carpentry or a musical jam session.  The stand-alone structure presents a simple profile that fits the agrarian utility of the owner’s needs on any given day.  As with a barn, every facet of the studio has a purpose & the ability to fit the task at hand, while maintaining the aesthetic of living side by side with nature and make it an indispensable part of the home.
