Sony’s recent announcement of an all-digital content distribution service has people up in arms. Most notably, it’s the gamers who are most vocal about the move. Does this signal the ultimate end of physical media? Although it might seem as such, the resurgence of classic formats such as CDs and vinyl records imply otherwise. In fact, the upcoming TD-1 reassures us that things are not about to change just yet.
If audiophiles have anything to say, the default horizontal orientation of turntables is already optimal. Since gravity is another factor to account for when precision playback matters, an upright design seems counterintuitive in a way. Nevertheless, we must admit that the visual spectacle it adds is a significant selling point.
So far, this model takes it even further courtesy of its modern and minimalist profile. The spec sheet tells us the TD-1 measures 12″ x 3″ x 1.6″ (HxWxD) and boasts an aluminum construction. Meanwhile, the platter is crafted out of acrylic and is compatible with popular vinyl record sizes.
At 10 lbs., you can easily mount it on the wall via the included bracket or hook it up to the optional floor stand. Honestly, the latter is great for owners who regularly rearrange their spaces. To secure the vinyl record while in use, a magnetic clamp holds it firmly in place on the spindle.
Elsewhere, the mechanical controls are located to the side of the sleek metallic plinth. Meanwhile, the belt-drive system, moving magnet cartridge, and tonearm automatically calibrate for exceptional acoustic fidelity. Owners can attach their favorite amplifier and speakers via RCA cables. Bluetooth connectivity is likewise supported by the TD-1.
