Loud noises are a huge no-no for households with pets or people with sensitive hearing. Unfortunately, some motorized appliances can generate an unpleasant sound — especially vacuum cleaners. The more powerful the performance, the louder it can get. However, the Matic Serene appears to be an exception. Although we can’t say for certain, the marketing claims it is so.

On average, commercial vacuum cleaners produce anywhere between 60 dB and 80 dB. As a matter of fact, some industrial models require operators to wear hearing protection equipment. Quieter options are indeed available, but this new autonomous cleanup machine is an upgrade of its predecessor.

According to the manufacturer, “Matic operates at about 55 dB while vacuuming, quieter than a typical conversation. Matic Serene brings that down to approximately 52 dB, with a softer, smoother sound that makes cleaning even less noticeable.” Furthermore, it goes even lower to 50 dB when patrolling.

Therefore, it’s inconspicuous enough to let owners enjoy their favorite activities without distractions. Meanwhile, software updates arrive regularly. Each firmware version improves its capabilities. For instance, the latest one introduces cool new features such as voice commands and gestures.

Design-wise, it does not follow the usual puck-like form factor. Instead, its main body resembles a small storage bin, while the roller is mounted on an actuating cleaning module in front. The unit relies on two large main wheels to move, while the smaller rear guide wheel keeps it level.

The Matic Serene uses visual SLAM to map out an optimal cleaning plan, while other sensors combine for obstacle avoidance and other functions. It’s versatile enough to recognize the type of surface, which then prompts the system to lift the mop head when it cleans debris off of carpets.
