At the 35th Monaco Yacht Show last month, the world’s leading shipyards all had plenty to show off. Of course, one prominent name in the business took advantage of the event to share a glimpse of a new concept and hopefully generate enough buzz to entice clients. Because for the right price, a glimpse of creativity like the HIVE can become reality.
The unveiling was conducted at the House of Feadship. This invite-only gathering ensures all eyes are on whatever the Dutch group has to offer and what’s on the horizon. This gargantuan vessel is the “largest concept design to date and explores a new approach to life on board, starting not with a conventional arrangement of spaces, but with the people who use them.”
For starters, the HIVE measures 377 feet from bow to stern. A rakish steel monohull with clean lines should help it cut through water like a blade. Meanwhile, the large swathes of its aluminum superstructure appear clad in glazing. Most have a mirror-like tint to keep glare at bay, but allow just enough through to light up the interior volumes naturally by day.
A major highlight among its luxe amenities is a 66-foot swimming pool on the owner’s deck. What makes it unique is the section that extends into the inside as a glass-bottom water feature. Furthermore, it includes Feadship’s in-house ContraWave technology. Another is the underwater lounge, which functions as an immersive social area aboard the superyacht.
Powering the HIVE’s hotel load and propulsion systems are three 900 kW variable speed/permanent magnet generators. Instead of traditional diesel, it uses HVO/MeOH hybrid fuel for a cleaner burn, while a Voith Schneider propeller allows the HIVE to cruise up to 12 knots.
