Paris, France-based firm CTRL ENERGY aims to end disposable tech with its ZERO Power Bank. It’s a 3D-printed, modular battery designed for infinite uses. It’s not designed for disposal when it no longer performs at its peak. Instead, it adapts to your needs with parts you can swap, customize, or upgrade.
For starters, the shell isn’t completely sealed. It comes with a magnetically attached lid that you can easily detach when you need to swap out dead rechargeable batteries for new ones. It boasts a generous battery capacity of about 21,000 mAh from six 3,500 mAh 18650 lithium-ion cells. The company recommends using validated batteries from Samsung, LG, or Molicel as replacements.
ZERO offers a USB-C port with up to 100W input and output power, an 18W USB-A port, and 15W wireless charging. If you want to upgrade or expand its capabilities, you can choose from ten add-ons. These include an EDC light, extra charging ports, and a solar charger (you can connect a foldable 18-W solar panel).
It also has a snap-on light for clear video recording and face-tracking tripods. You can also build a power station from five ZERO power banks using an add-on that syncs the units. The chained five units deliver a colossal 105,000-mAh capacity. This lets you top off several devices at once.
ZERO also hides a couple of handy features, including a cutout near the top that doubles as a carry handle or lanyard hole. It can also hold a cable winder, which you can 3D print yourself. CTRL ENERGY also has a smaller sibling for the ZERO called the Subzero, which houses a replaceable 5,000-mAh battery cell in the same modular, customizable format.
