If you’re into plushies and wildlife, then the African Safari Chair from Belgian-based AP Collection is sure to tickle your fancy. The limited-edition design combines the softness of New Zealand sheepskin with silky animal plushies stuffed with recycled plastics. It’s a remarkable piece of furniture that invites interactive play and tactile interaction.
The plushies include giraffe, lion, buffalo, zebra, elephant, leopard, crocodile, and some apes, to name a few. The design idea took inspiration from the endearing love story of the furniture brand’s co-founders, Alexis and Pauline Montironi. They exchanged stuffed animals to show their affection for each other. It also bridged their geographical gap.
Once reunited, they turned this simple yet powerful symbol of affection into furniture design and subsequently founded AP Collection. Pauline tells Homecrux that the African Safari Chair was “imagined as a small landscape of its own, where each animal contributes to the story of the piece.”
It’s a unique, loud, and colorful design that doesn’t compromise on its function. The arrangement of the plushies are distinct “to preserve both the composition and the comfort of the seat.” According to Homecrux, the first step in making the furniture is the fabrication of fiberglass shells. Then each plush animal is selected and padded with recycled plastics before being hand-sewn into the chair by artisans.
The African Safari Chair pays homage to the richness of the African landscape. Meanwhile, a metal pedestal completes the chair’s design, offering structural support and integrity. The pedestals are available in different finishes, including matte, chrome, plated, and wood.
