It’s almost five years since Valve launched the Steam Deck, but there is no clue yet as to when its sequel will drop. So far, the competition is pumping out new SKUs now and then. ASUS, MSI, Acer, and Lenovo, for instance, are growing their market share. Not to be outdone, GPD gives us the WIN Max 3 — a flagship-tier gaming/productivity device.

Unlike the popular handheld gaming PCs on the market right now, the brand follows a distinctive design. To date, the only deviation from this signature approach is the Win 5. The rest, meanwhile, incorporate a full QWERTY physical keyboard. However, don’t expect it to match the efficiency and ergonomics you get from a traditional workstation or laptop.

For the WIN Max 3, GPD goes for a modular system. One is the 97 Wh (Flex Power) battery, which is in the box. The other is an optional dual-fan cooling accessory. Grab the latter to enable higher TPD limits. Unfortunately, it requires you to hook up the unit to a power outlet. Come to think of it, this is a small caveat in exchange for smoother performance.

Both attach securely via strong magnets. The top-of-the-line configuration buyers can go with includes an AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 388, 128 GB LPDDR5x 8000 RAM, and 4 TB NVMe 2280 SSD internal storage. If you still need more space, an SSD expansion slot is accessible within the housing, in addition to the microSD Express slot.

Another awesome selling point is the 9.06″ AMOLED touchscreen, with an eSports-grade 165 Hz refresh rate and 1060 nits peak brightness. The WIN Max 3 features a clamshell mechanism, hall-effect triggers, a touchpad, analog sticks, face buttons, shoulder buttons, 2x USB-A, and 2x USB-C.
