Apple might be late to the foldable game, but demand for the iPhone Duo is projected to be exceedingly high in the coming weeks. After the iPhone Air failed to become a huge hit, some are a bit wary about book-style folding handsets. Although it’s too early to tell, some issues could arise once units are in consumers’ hands. Meanwhile, Xiaomi is revisiting flexible displays once more with the 18 Fold.
The Chinese consumer electronics group is about to go up against industry titans. These are Samsung, Honor, Oppo, Vivo, Google, and Huawei, to name a few. This upcoming model is ditching the slim and tall aspect ratio of previous outings. Instead, it is also going for a wider silhouette.
As a flagship entry, it comes as a surprise that the usual chipsets are nowhere to be found. It seems Xiaomi is equipping the 18 Fold with an in-house AI SoC. The XRING O3 is the second silicon from the Android OEM. It uses a 3 nm process and manages to pack 24 billion transistors this time around, which is a remarkable leap over the 19 billion transistors of its predecessor.
Powering this book-style foldable is a 6000 mAh silicon-carbon battery. The device supports 67W wired and 50W wireless charging protocols. It “is lighter than all previous Xiaomi foldable smartphones. Super-elliptical large R corners and a flat-edge frame give the phone a smooth in-hand feel and appearance.”
Storage/RAM configurations include 12 GB + 256 GB, 12 GB + 512 GB, 16 GB + 512 GB, and 16 GB + 1 TB. The outer display measures 5.38 inches, while the main panel is 7.58 inches. Xiaomi is hooking up the 18 Fold with a Leica-tuned 200 MP main, 50 MP periscope, and a 50 MP ultra-wide-angle.
