CRKT’s Altai fixed blade has a couple of useful tricks up its sheath. Aside from a remarkably sharp and tough blade, it also has a fire starter and sharpening rod, making it a reliable hunting and survival companion.
It gets its name from Spartan Precision Equipment founder Rob Gearing’s hunt in Mongolia’s Altai Mountains. It features its Spartan influence throughout, from the carbon fiber-inspired scales to the signature Spartan head on the handle pins. The knife also features a hi-vis orange colorway to make the tool visible in the dark.
The Altai features a 3.53-inch-long ceramic-coated plain-edge blade crafted from 14C28N steel for durability and excellent edge retention. Its ceramic-coated, glass-reinforced nylon handle offers lightweight strength. The knife measures an overall length of 8″ and a weight of 3.60 oz.
For ease of use, there’s jimping on the finger choil, spine, and rear handle to ensure a comfortable and secure grip. It features a ringed pommel that delivers a swift, secure draw with or without gloves, while a hole in the pommel offers additional options for a fob or retention setup.
For versatile use in and out of the wild, the Altai features a striking notch on the spine that works with the ferro rod. The ceramic sharpening rod keeps the blade sharp for everyday utility, for hunting and kitchen tasks alike. The two additional tools are stored in the thermoplastic sheath, which also has a reflective orange paracord. The ferro rod and ceramic sharpening rod also use the same orange paracord as pulls. This way, both the knife and its companion EDC tools are always visible in the dark.
