Have you checked your social media feeds lately? How about your favorite news sources? Many have already marked this month on their calendars because of a major astronomical event. With all this hype, OMEGA and Swatch recognize the huge opportunity for publicity. The timing is impeccable as they introduce a new MoonSwatch variant called MISSION TO THE SUN – SOLAR ECLIPSE.
For those wondering, the cosmetic tweaks here are subtle yet distinct enough upon closer inspection. At a glance, reference SSX01J100-1 looks exactly like a 1:1 copy of the standard MoonSwatch MISSION TO THE SUN. Nevertheless, there are clever modifications that set it apart from the previous release.
Once again, every MISSION TO THE SUN – SOLAR ECLIPSE arrives in a 42 mm x 47.30 mm x 13.25 mm yellow BIOCERAMIC case. The chronograph flaunts a yellow BIOCERAMIC bezel with a tachymeter scale in red against a white insert. Next, it frames a golden dial alongside three white auxiliary counters.
This is followed by white hour/minute hands, a red second hand, red sub-dial hands, white baton hour markers, black indices, Speedmaster script, MoonSwatch badge, and an OMEGA x Swatch co-branding at 12 o’clock. Also, the chronograph pusher at 2 o’clock is in black, while the battery cover features a New Moon graphic.
According to the MISSION TO THE SUN – SOLAR ECLIPSE product page, it’s “a subtle yet striking detail that echoes the defining moment of this total solar eclipse.” The timepiece boasts a water-resistance rating of 3 Bar, while a mechanical quartz movement is at the core of its timekeeping duties.
Finally, the package includes a two-tone white rubber strap with a yellow underside in the texture of the lunar surface. A BIOCERAMIC loop and VELCRO closure securely hold the MISSION TO THE SUN – SOLAR ECLIPSE in place on your wrist.
