As a celebration of the 45th anniversary of the beginning of the Nike Cortez line, this classic silhouette is getting a modern upgrade in the new Nike Cortez Flyknit Sneaker ($TBA). The Cortez was originally released in 1972. It was Nike’s first track shoe and soon became a brand leader.

The Flyknit forgoes the traditional nylon and leather uppers of the Cortez line and replaces it with a lightweight, ultra-breathable synthetic material. The ankle gives a more sock-like appearance. This sleek track-ready shoe retains the iconic form but has eliminated the old sharktooth outsole for a modern, enhanced look that is padded for extra cushioning. It is presented in two colorways. There is the OG white/red/blue combination paying tribute to the Nike’s worn by Forrest Gump in the eponymous movie, and a classic black/white option. Both feature a retro looking Swoosh while the toecap and side panels have been reworked.

The old-meets-new blending of the Cortez Flyknit track shoe shows that comfort from any era is always in style.
