Mountainsmith, based in Boulder, Colorado, is committed to making the best, most rugged, and most functional outdoor gear possible. With the Rocky Mountains right outside their door as a test ground, the company’s founder Patrick Smith makes sure all their bags can withstand the most rigorous back-country adventures.
Based on the classic 1990’s Tyrol design, the limited edition Mountainsmith USA Tyrol Backpack ($180) is hand-sewn in Boulder as part of their initiative to return to a USA made product line. The new Tyrol’s are being made in groups of twenty from 100% upcycled materials. The shell is a combination of Cordura and coated nylon with a nylon liner. There is a double paneled water-resistant tarpaulin bottom and an internal hydration sleeve.
The Tyrol weighs just under one pound and measures 18 1/2″ x 13′ x 7 1/4″. It can hold up to 60 pounds of gear and supplies and comes in either Pinion Green or Heritage Red. As well as the inherent durability of this hand-crafted pack, you are assured the uniqueness of each unit by its production number and the initials of the craftsman who made it. [via]
