True wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds are awesome. The convenience they bring to the table makes traditional wired earphones and headphones no longer as appealing as before. Although audiophiles and other music enthusiasts still prefer the older hardware, sales data imply otherwise. In the meantime, Sennheiser’s upcoming MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 is teasing a unique selling point that might convince others to make the switch.
Given the technological constraints imposed by the compact size of these products, manufacturers must take into account battery life. In all our years trying out a variety of makes and models, we never found it an issue. The charging case is also a huge help, as it keeps your TWS earbuds fully charged when not in use.
However, a feature the German outfit plans to introduce is potentially a game-changer. Among the upgrades listed for this new SKU, what caught our attention is the user-replaceable battery. Over time, repeated charging eventually degrades performance. If this is as straightforward as they make it to be, we need more companies to adopt a more pro-consumer approach.
The MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 lasts up to 12 hours on a single charge, with another 24 hours more from its Qi-enabled charging case. For ergonomics, Sennheiser reworks the housing into a shape developed based on data from a thousand ear models. You get a snug fit that does not feel stuffy after extended listening sessions.
At the same time, an IP54 rating ensures dust, sweat, and splash resistance. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Sound then enhances sound quality. Sennheiser is shipping these in five snazzy metallic colorways. These are Denim, Copper, Graphite, Cream, and Lavender. MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 units are due to drop on September 3, 2026.
