There’s plenty of PlayStation 5 rumors going around. The PlayStation 5 release date is far away, probably like 4-5 years from now, but that won’t stop all the rumors about the next-gen console from Sony.

Update – May 27, 2016 – Earlier this month, CEO of Ubisoft, Yves Guillemot, gave his piece on the future of gaming and consoles. According to him, there will be another generation of traditional gaming consoles, such as the PS5. After that, it’ll be the era of stream consoles, and the old will make way for the new.

This has been said before as well, that soon, gaming consoles will shrink in size and will be small boxes that will be used to stream games on to any screen. Looks like there will be a PS5 and even an Xbox 2, before the traditional game consoles are phased out. Meanwhile, we’re still waiting for Sony to release the PS4K.

PlayStation 4.5?

Update – March 26, 2016 – More sources have now confirmed that Sony will be releasing a new PlayStation 4K soon. It will not be called PS 4.5, thankfully. Also, that 4K resolution won’t actually let you play games in 4K, as that kind of technology is still pretty expensive.

We will see a more powerful processor and GPU, that can provide a higher dynamic range and a wider colour gamut for gaming. Eurogamer has listed down a few possibilities for a new PS4. A PS5 is still far away or may not even happen, according to some reports.

Update – March 20, 2016 – According to a new report by Kotaku, Sony may be working on an improved version of the PlayStation 4 with next-gen graphics and 4K support.

We’ve heard reports and rumors suggesting that the PS5 could be released this year, but that sounded impossible. The website has heard from several sources that a more powerful PS4, dubbed as PS 4.5, is in development and could be released as soon as this year.

After the release of PS VR, which is a much cheaper solution than Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive, Sony wants to improve the PS4 so it run PS VR better. The only problem with PS VR is that it won’t be as good as the Oculus Rift or HTC VIVE as both of them rely on much more powerful PC’s than the PS4.

Therefore, a much powerful PS 4.5 would not only improve the quality of VR content on PS VR, but also be much cheaper than buying the Rift or Vive.

Update – March 13, 2016 – We haven’t heard anything new about the next-gen console from Sony. No new leaks or reports or rumors to add to the mix. We’ll have to wait for the PlayStation VR announcement to see if Sony announces talks about the PS5.

Update – March 3, 2016 – Take this with plenty of salt. A new report suggests that Sony may announce the PlayStation 5 at the end of 2016. The PlayStation VR is launching later this year and as per experts, it’s more than just an accessory for the PS4.

Experts believe that the PS VR is the pave way for the cloud-based PS5 gaming console, which will be launched towards the end of this year. Sony has a patent for a glove-based controller, which along with PS VR and the cloud-based device, could very well be the PlayStation 5.

Yes, it does sound a little far-fetched, as we aren’t really expecting the PS5 till 2019 or 2020.

Update – February 19, 2016 – We haven’t really learned any new details about the upcoming console from Sony since the last update, but there’s something new now.

In an interview, Paul Ross, an ex Need for Speed developer, stated that gaming on the new PS5 is going to be much more realistic. PS5 games would have dynamic and interactive Worlds that behave differently than Worlds in current games.

Sony PlayStation 5 Models: VR and Streaming

According to a new report, the next generation Sony PlayStation 5 could come in two models. Like smartphones, console gamers will now be given a choice between two devices. That could be good as Sony could introduce a full-blown console with VR support and another one that’s more like a Streaming device.

Previous rumors have suggested that the PS5 could be smaller in size and could be a streaming device that allows you to stream games onto your TV. Other reports say that Sony will be using a very powerful AMD chipset to provide the best gaming experience. The PS5 will also reportedly lose it’s disc drive.

If all that is true, then it makes sense to release two variations for the console. Maybe one of the models could feature a 4K Blu-ray Disc player and other one be an affordable version with streaming capability and cloud storage (think PlayStation Now). By the time the PS5 hits the market, 4K will be the display standard for most games.

PlayStation 5 Rumors

Some say that the next PlayStation will not be a fully-fledged gaming console. Instead, it would be a streaming device. Others say that the PS5 would be the last of the game consoles. It would feature the most advanced 4k graphics and best of hardware, including Virtual Reality support.

Now that all sounds great, but what if Sony has something else planned for us. New reports suggest that the next-gen PlayStation 5 may not be a gaming console, it could just be a streaming device. The streaming scene has grown a lot in years, and you can pretty much just stream a game from your PC to your TV and play.

Imagine a portable, pocket-sized PlayStation that you could just plug-in to your television and start streaming games. Of course, you’d need a good internet connection, but that’s not so hard to get these days.

Also, PlayStation Now, Sony’s cloud-based gaming platform, will make it easy for gamers just to stream any game they like on a supported TV, Smartphone or tablet. No disk drivers, no storage, just a reliable internet connection. Just select a game and start streaming it, voila! The future of gaming is going to be cloud based, but we’re not sure if that begins with the PlayStation 5.

PlayStation 5 Release Date

We can’t really give you a proper PlayStation 5 release date; there’s just not enough to go on. All the PlayStation 5 rumors are just that, rumors, so there’s nothing concrete yet.

Yes, we do know that AMD will make super powerful graphic and processor chips for the PlayStation 5 and that Sony will announce the product in 5-7 years time. Apart from that, there’s not really much that’s known about the PS5.

PS5 Backwards Compatibility

The latest PS5 rumor says that the next-gen console from Sony will have backward compatibility for older games. This is has been a major problem with current consoles, as they don’t offer much regarding backward compatibility.

What does this mean? Well, you’ll be able to play PS4 and hopefully PS3 games on the latest console. A recent report stated that the new GTA 6 game will be released alongside the PS5. If that’s the case, then we might see the PlayStation 5 console within the next four years.

Backward compatibility is an excellent feature to be available on a gaming console. Not only can you play games with improved graphics and performance, but you’ll also be able to enjoy older titles. If Sony does include backward compatibility for PS4 and PS3 in the PlayStation 5, that would definitely win a lot of hearts.

According to Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, the Sony PlayStation 5 will be released in 2019 or 2020.
