In a surprise move, Torrentz.eu, the largest torrent search engine in the world, has shut down operations after over 13 years of being online.

When users when to look for their favorite torrents today, the site didn’t provide any results. Everything on the site, all the torrent links, have been removed. Even members who tried to log in, were treated with a sad farewell message. The home page is still active though.

Torrentz doesn’t upload any torrents of its own. Instead, it is a search engine that provides links to other torrent sites. You could search for anything you wanted, and get results from various torrent sites, everything in one single page. The site could, however, ask torrent owners to remove links, which many members did not like.

The site was launched in 2003 and has been online ever since. That’s over 13 years of impeccable service for all its users and it also makes it the oldest torrent service to date. Talking about users, the site had over 1 million daily visitors.

Therefore, it’s surprising that the site shutdown without any notice. Nobody saw this coming, and the site hasn’t provided any details either. A few weeks ago, KickAss Torrents, was also shut down because its owner was arrested. However, there are mirror sites that are currently hosting KickAss content.

On the home page of Torrentz.eu, you will now see the following message;

Torrentz was a free, fast and powerful meta-search engine combining results from dozens of search engines.

And when you try to sign in or click on Help, you will read this;

Torrentz will always love you. Farewell.

That’s it. This is the end of an era. We’re not sure why this has happened, and even TorrentFreak, who were contacted by Torrentz, didn’t get much information. It’s a huge blow to the torrent community, as there isn’t another site that can replace it. Of course, there are other similar sites, but none as big as Torrentz. Looks like users will have to look elsewhere for torrent downloads.

Hopefully, we’ll learn soon as to why Torrentz.eu was shut down. We’ll update the article when we have more information.
