For years, we’ve been hearing that Samsung is working on a foldable phone. The project, called by many “Galaxy X”, was rumored to appear during the Mobile World Congress. But Samsung’s press conference came and went on February 26, and we saw no Galaxy X. In fact, the only thing Samsung showed at the press conference was the Galaxy Tab S3 and a teaser for the announce date of the Galaxy S8. Many fans were disappointed that the Galaxy X did not make the press conference. But now, the Korean company filed for a patent that might make the foldable phone a reality.
The Galaxy X trademark
After months of hearing that the Galaxy X is on track, Samsung finally gave us a glimmer of hope. The Korean company filed for a trademark over at KIPRIS (the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service) for the Galaxy X brand. The company marketed the phone in some videos, and we even got a glimpse of how it might work. So far, the names Galaxy Wing and Galaxy X were in play. Now, the wait might be over soon, with the trademark suggesting that Samsung indeed plans a Galaxy X phone. Whether it will be foldable or not, we will have to wait and see.
The history of Galaxy X
As we mentioned, the Galaxy X has been in play for quite some time now. That was the codename that appeared for the foldable phone project. Samsung started this project in 2011, and since then, we’ve seen some videos and concept phones.
The first time Samsung showed the prototype of the phone, we got a bulky and chunky device. Still, the device was able to withstand 100,000 folds with just 6% drop in brightness at the center of the phone when you fold it. At the beginning, Samsung showed the phone just as a concept, not as a commercial product. But we quickly got concept video of the phone.
Possible release date
The second we got the info that the Korean company filed for the trademark for the Galaxy X, rumors started when the phone will make it to the market. Take these with a grain of salt. However, we must say that the rumors suggest a possible launch date in the third quarter of 2017. For those of you familiar with Samsung’s cycle of releasing phones, that is the date for the Note launch. Will Samsung make the next note a foldable phone? Or will the company release a Note and an X product? Let’s wait and see.
