The Hateful Eight, Quentin Tarantino’s newest holiday release, just received its first official trailer.
Tarantino’s new film stars Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell and Jennifer Jason Leigh, among others. Each star plays a character in the film who is recognizable by a nickname. For example, Jackson’s character, Major Marquis Warren, is also known as “The Bounty Hunter.” In total, there are eight major characters in the film, hence the title.

In the trailer, we get a glimpse of all eight of the stars’ roles as their characters. While Jackson appears to be playing the role, seven of the eight stars are fighting to get Leigh’s character, “The Prisoner.” “The Prisoner,” as announced by Russell, playing “The Hangman,” has a bounty worth $10,000. This prompts the rest of the cast to fight over “The Prisoner” to earn the bounty.
The other five stars of the film are Walton Goggins as “The Sherriff,” Demian Bichir as “The Mexican,” Tim Roth as “The Little Man,” Michael Madsen as “The Cow Puncher” and Burce Dern as “The Confederate.”
The Western theme of the movie directly correlates with Tarantino’s most recent release Django Unchained. Tarantino has mentioned numerous times that the spaghetti western genre has always been a huge influence on him as a film maker. Typically, Tarantino’s films tend to deal with issues such as racism, gender inequality and morality. Expect all three of these to play a role in his newest film.
Tarantino’s new film was announced back in 2013, but it got off to a rocky start. In January of 2014, the script for the film was leaked on the internet. Upset over leak, Tarantino canceled his plans to create the film and, instead, decided to publish the script as a novel. Later that year, while reading the script to a live audience, Tarantino announced that he was going to move forward with the film. To prevent the leak from affecting fans viewing the film, Tarantino also announced he was writing two new drafts, each with a different ending than the leaked script. Filming began in January of 2015.
One unique characteristic of The Hateful Eight is its planned release in the classic 70 mm film format. When the film releases, it will only be viewable in the 70 mm format in theatres. However, on January 8, 2016, the film will officially release in digital nationwide.
At a $44 million budget, this is the lowest budget film Tarantino has made since 2004’s Kill Bill: Volume 2. The film also happens to be eighth film made by Tarantino – if you count Kill Bill volumes 1 and 2 as one film, or if you don’t count Death Proof.
The Hateful Eight releases in 70 mm film format on Christmas Day and in digital on January 8, 2016.
