Basis Peak fitness trackers are being recalled after some of its users sustained burns due to the device’s faulty design.
Fitness tracker company Basis has announced that it is recalling all of its Peak fitness trackers ever sold after finding out that a number of the device’s users have sustained burns from the device.
It appears that a flaw in the design of Basis Peak fitness trackers has resulted to overheating of the device in some cases –causing discomfort, blisters, and even burns on the wrist to a number of its users.
In an email sent to Basis Peak fitness trackers’ customers, the company wrote:
Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we aren’t able to develop such a solution without completely compromising the user experience. As a result, we are asking that you return your Basis Peak watch and authorized accessories for a full refund at your earliest convenience. This was a tough decision, but your safety is our top priority.
Aside from giving customers a full refund for the fitness tracker itself, Basis also went as far as refunding all accessories purchased by its customers for Peak — including charging cradles and wrist bands.
The company first confirmed Peak’s overheating problem in June, after some users complained about burns sustained from the fitness tracker, as well as cases wherein the device’s charging cradle have melted.
Basis first attempted to contain the problem by recommending users to refrain from using the device’s charging cradle, and to temporarily refrain from wearing the device.
The move by the company to recall all of its Peak devices, however, follows a failed attempt to fix the fault in its wearable’s design through a software update tweak.
While users may opt to keep their Basis Peak fitness trackers at their own risk, syncing of the device will no longer be supported by the start of next year.
