A small home with big volumes, the Little Big House sits unobtrusively on a pristine forested hill in Wellington Park – a natural reserve of the state of Tasmania, Australia. With a modest footprint, the adobe the dwelling is shaped on two levels which step to match the undulating landscape.

Designed to be ultra-private, the box-like home features apertures that are carefully positioned to create windows that open to either garden, sky, or lush surroundings. The ground level, containing the living and dining areas, offers views to the garden via a long strip window, while the mezzanine level with sleeping spaces affords extensive views to the Southern horizon. Three full height vents ensure the house stays ventilated in the summer, and a wood fire warms the place in the cold months.

With polycarbonate cladding on the eastern and western facades, the clean volume gets luminous shadow walls, making the house appear both light and contained.
